More about Sport And Peace, Conflict Prevention And Peace-Building for War affected Youth In Northern Uganda
For the past 21 years Northern Uganda has been engulfed in a complex conflict situation in which the Lord Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel group with the stated aim of delivering the region’s Acholi people from the yoke of the central government, has been brutalizing its own communities with acts of unspeakable cruelty.
Since the beginning of the Juba Peace talks, some prospects for peace exist for Northern Uganda. The Juba peace process has been widely supported by the affected communities and there is a need for continued consolidation of the achievements that have so far been registered towards a peaceful settlement of the conflict. As a number of stakeholders struggle for a peaceful settlement of the conflict, reconciliation remains a paramount priority and local community conflicts need to be properly resolved as the IDPs return to their home areas.
GUFO has been Supporting specific conflict resolution and peace building, as well as reintegration of ex-combatants in their communities of origin through sports. As a result, communities in Lira and Kitgum Districts were able to realize some relative peace which to date determined their decision of returning to satellite camps.
