More about Girls on the Go
Girls some as young as 10 years of age who live in the slums of the magomeni kotas area in Daresalaam, about 20 minutes drive from the town centre, are at a great risk of being affected by their lifestyles as most of these 1 or 2 bedroomed houses are occupied by 6-10 member families-- mostly single parented who cannot fend for their families.
The economic activities in this area is the sale of hard local brew, drugs and prostitution. Girls on the Go organises soccer teams where the girls (10-17 years of age) also get a chance to receive reproductive health, HIV and STDS education and life skills information and to participate in local and internatinonal soccer tournaments.Twice a week their mums, sisters and aunts can join batik tye and dye, hair braiding and recycling shopping-bags classes to learn an alternative way to earn decent living.
