More about Coach for College
Coach for College (CFC) provides equipment and instruction to catalyze the development of sports and life skills among middle-school youth in developing countries, and helps them develop excitement for and proficiency in science and language using sports as a means to applied learning. During three-week camps held in the summer, American collegiate athletes team with bilingual college students and others near the project area to teach sports, academics, and life skills classes to rising sixth-ninth graders who live near partner middle schools. By giving student participants successive opportunities to gain new knowledge and skills and increasing levels of responsibility, the program seeks to maximize the student participants’ persistence in school and specifically to increase the number of youth from low-income communities who reach high school and university. The fundamental assumption is that sports can be used as an entry point into developing relationships between universities and communities, and can also foster a sense of common interests and values among people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
