Beyond Sport Foundation Spotlight: 2nd Chance Group

With Beyond Sport United and the Global Awards now less than 3 months away, we’re taking a 10th anniversary look back at some of our past winners, and how they have progressed with the support of Beyond Sport and our Foundation.

We have been supporting organisations for many years that use sport to make communities safer. UK-based sport for social change organisation, 2nd Chance Group, is one of those organisations, and their project ‘National Alliance of Sport for the Desistance of Crime’ (NASDC) won our Best Partnership or Collaboration Award in 2017.

2nd Chance Group believe the power of sport can help society’s most complex and challenging people tackle crime and make communities safer. By launching the National Alliance of Sport for the Desistance of Crime, 2nd Chance Group are providing a voice for the sector and convening the best people to support the development, delivery and evaluation of best practice in using Sport for Development across the criminal justice system.

NASDC’s mission is to provide their network with the learning, skills and resources to tackle crime through sport. The Alliance does this through building a robust evidence base, advancing best policy and practice, increasing investment and supporting new learning and collaboration around sport being used to prevent crime. NASDC supports members from around the world and provide (through sport):

• Better crime prevention initiatives

• Alternatives to custody (reducing the prison population and encouraging the desistance from crime)

• Better provision in prisons and support for offenders (reducing reoffending)

With the help of Beyond Sport, over the past year 2nd Chance Group have been raising their profile and are having an impact on sport across the criminal justice system. They have therefore indirectly impacted over 85,000 people in custody and hope to eventually support a reduction on the 10.6 million crimes that are committed annually in England and Wales.

They are now building a service user and community-led approach to influence funders and policy makers, which supports both their sustainable development and champions sport as a proactive tool for development and peace.

Since winning our Beyond Sport Global Award, 2nd Chance Group have strengthened their proposition, engaged with more Government partners, grown their membership and expanded their range of projects.

Founder of 2nd Chance Group, James Mapstone has said: “As we approach key influencers, national partners, government ministers and various ambassadors, having the Beyond Sport Award winning stamp and the recognition that goes with it, has been extremely valuable in helping us to confirm our market position and demonstrate our expertise.”

With the funding provided by the Beyond Sport Foundation, they have been able to begin establishing NASDC as a new charitable incorporated organisation. They have also been able to seek out consultant expertise to carry out an assessment of their group,  and are now exploring the possibility of expanding into U.S. markets.

NASDC have also been able to increase their membership numbers to over 300 strategic and development partners. By 2021, their goal is to grow this further to reach over 1000 members.

The ongoing support of the Beyond Sport Foundation allows organisations like this one to expand and develop best-practice in using sport as a tool to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

NASDC works towards SDG 16 ‘Peace, Justice and strong Institutions’. However, its model and approach is also aligned to SDG 17 ‘Partnership to achieve the goals’.

If the Global Goals are achieved, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. Beyond Sport believes that using sport is an effective and game-changing approach to make this happen.
