These inspirational memoirs, fun family flicks and insightful documentaries will surely make the perfect additions to your holiday programming.

Something to Inspire: “Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story”

Recommended by: Ivan Torres, Project Coordinator, Interculturalidad, Salud y Derechos (INSADE) A.C.

“Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story” is a 1997 television film about Olympic diver Greg Louganis and his inspirational and trailblazing journey as an athlete with HIV positive status. “It inspired me. It’s about an athlete who in the end, has to face all those stigmas, all those prejudices for living with HIV and being homosexual,” Ivan said. “It is something that happens in reality, because it is what our beneficiaries face every day.”

Something for the Next Book Club:
  “I am Malala”

Recommended by: Taylor Smith, Executive Director, Free to Run

“I AM MALALA” is the international best-selling memoir from activist, leader and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Malala Yousafzai. When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen she was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school. Few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala’s miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York.

Something for Family Movie Night:
“GOAL: The Dream Begins”

Recommended by: Khusbu Oli, Founder and Executive Director, Shelter Nepal

“Goal: the Dream Begins” is a 2005 film starring Kuno Becker as Santiago Munez, a young man with a rough background who is offered the chance to trial with one of England's top football clubs. A favorite amongst Beyond Sport staff, “Goal” is just the right amount of corny, sweet and thrilling. Khusbu recalls that the Shelter Nepal football team watched this for inspiration before heading off to the Homeless World Cup in 2018.
