Beyond Sport releases new tool to strengthen youth sport programs

The Futures in Motion Positive Youth Development Self-Assessment Tool helps organizations reflect, improve and grow their impact
now available in Australia and Japan

Organizations working with young people in Australia and Japan (with other locations to come) now have access to a new resource designed to support stronger, more intentional programming.

Launched as part of Futures in Motion — a collaboration between Beyond Sport and New Balance Foundation to advance Positive Youth Development (PYD) through sport — the PYD Self-Assessment Tool is a free digital resource to help organizations assess their current approaches and receive custom recommendations to strengthen their youth programming.

Co-created with experts in each program location and grounded in local context, it walks organizations through key areas including financial sustainability, governance, leadership and child safeguarding — with youth voice and empowerment embedded throughout.

For a community club or nonprofit, that might look like taking stock of how young people are currently involved in decision-making, identifying gaps in safeguarding practices or reflecting on how inclusive their programming truly is. From there, the tool offers tailored insights and practical, evidence-based recommendations that teams can act on immediately.

This is intended as a starting point, not a standalone resource. An upcoming Capacity Building Series in Australia and Japan will build on its focus areas through expert-led training, practical learning resources and peer exchange to support organizations as they put insights into practice.

“What I believe is powerful about this PYD self-assessment tool is that it meets organizations where they’re at. It’s non-invasive, self-directed and helps them make sense of their working systems and structures, see what’s missing and take practical steps forward. Over time, that creates stronger programs, better experiences for young people and more opportunities for them to grow through sport.”

Users can download reports to support planning and internal alignment and revisit the tool over time to track progress, compare results and identify new priorities as their work evolves.

The tool is now available in Australia and Japan, with plans to release the Poland edition and global version to follow.
