Against the backdrop of a global pandemic recovery, rapid climate change, rising socio-political tensions and technological acceleration, innovation in sport for sustainable development has become a necessity for effective programming. To share insights on how innovation has been mobilized, defined, practiced and supported in diverse contexts around the world over the last five years, the Olympism365 (O365) Innovation Hub recently released State of Play in 2025: Innovation in Sport for Sustainable Development.
The O365 Innovation Hub is a collaboration between the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Beyond Sport and Women Win to support a global community of innovators advancing new ideas and technologies to maximize sport’s impact. As part of a consortium also including technical partners Ready Sport Global and Think Beyond, we are working to advance a shared understanding of the core enablers of social change. It is our collective belief that innovation is delivered when a powerful idea that challenges the status quo is tested, put into action and fully developed. It overcomes barriers, addresses unmet needs and ultimately has the power to transform communities and systems around the world.
‘State of Play’ is a comprehensive analysis on innovative trends, drivers, challenges and opportunities in sport for development. The report draws from research and the lived experience and recommendations of 61 innovators from 33 countries supported by the O365 Innovation Hub, encompassing:
1. A snapshot into global trends and developments on how innovation has been mobilized over the last five years
2. Discussion on what has enabled or constrained progress
3. Insights into how impactful practices can be scaled beyond 2025
As part of the study, we are also honored to feature some of the exciting work our O365 Innovators including:
• Alive and Kicking Kenya which has created jobs by making 1M+ footballs while employing youth and people with disabilities.
• eMuseum of Sports Brazil which runs VR/AI experiences for people with disabilities, founded by Bianca Gama Pena.
• Fenikks which recycles plastic waste into football shin guards in Argentina – one pair sold funds another pair donated.
