“Using sport with intention to me is about harnessing its proven power to uplift an individual, a community and the world.”
Beyond Sport is honored to welcome Lisa Nelson to our Board of Directors. As an independent board director and a trusted advisor to both corporate and startup organizations, she brings over 25 years of global experience in the technology and financial services industries, alongside a deep belief in sports unifying power.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Lisa Nelson to the Beyond Sport Board. With a distinguished track record in venture capital and innovation, Lisa brings invaluable expertise and real ballast around governance and finance. Her deep passion for sport — both at an individual and community level – makes her an ideal addition as we chart the future of impact through sport,” said Nick Keller, Beyond Sport founder, Board chair and Benchmark CEO.
A seasoned executive, Nelson has held senior leadership roles at Fortune 500 companies, including 15 years at Microsoft, where she served in executive finance and business development roles. Notably, she co-founded and was the Managing Director of Microsoft’s first venture fund, investing in more than 80 startups worldwide.
Nelson has extensive expertise in innovation, digital transformation and governance. She began her career in public accounting in the U.S. and Australia, later transitioning to financial services work in the UK. Today, she continues to lend her insights and skills as a venture capital, startup advisor and board director to numerous companies around the world. She also serves on the board of Brooks Running, the leading performance running brand in the U.S., and is a member of the Edmund Hillary Fellowship in New Zealand. As a triathlete and Ironman competitor, she has completed over 100 races, demonstrating a personal commitment to health and endurance.
Having lived in Australia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and Southeast Asia, and traveled to over 90 countries, Nelson brings a broad international mindset to Beyond Sport. A passionate advocate for the power of sport, she believes in its ability to unite people, instill values and build community.
“I am, and have always been, a huge believer in the power of sports to unite the world. Even in times of chaos, people will rally around “their” team, putting differences aside to focus on what unites us, versus what divides us. I’m also a believer in the power of sports to transform an individual. Participating in sports teaches valuable life lessons, like discipline, the value of hard work, respect, and how to be part of a team. It can also give a person hopes and dreams. Beyond Sport’s focus on this is something we desperately need more of in the world,” she shared.
