Beyond Sport is pleased to announce that Caryl M. Stern has joined our Board of Directors. Having been involved in sport for social impact for over 30 years, Stern brings invaluable insights and experience in support of our mission to champion people and communities through sport.
“Caryl’s lifetime of commitment to effect change in communities, whether it be through global NGO’s or some of the most impactful foundations, is remarkable. For Caryl to accept this position on the Board is a testament to the progress we have made in serving the sport for impact community. It also serves as further recognition that with all her experience she sees sport as part of the solution to many of the issues impacting young people. Her guidance will help fuel us for the next stage and I am personally looking forward to the great benefits of her wisdom and experience,” said Nick Keller, Beyond Sport founder and Board chair and Benchmark CEO.
Currently serving as the Chief Impact Officer at LionTree, a leading independent investment and merchant bank in the U.S., Stern has had an expansive career at the intersection of media, technology and philanthropy. She is the former Executive Director of the Walton Family Foundation (2020 to 2023), and before that served as President and CEO of UNICEF USA for 14 years. There she led the organization’s efforts to improve children’s lives worldwide. Prior to joining UNICEF USA, Stern was an executive at the Anti-Defamation League, the founding director of its A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute and the Dean of Students at Polytechnic University.
Stern’s leadership extends beyond her professional roles. She is an activist, executive, author and public speaker who has dedicated her career to making a difference for others. She was invited to present at the White House’s inaugural summit on The United State of Women and was recognized by People Magazine as one of “25 Women Changing the World” in 2017. Her contributions to social impact and leadership have earned her five honorary doctoral degrees. Stern is also the author of “I Believe in ZERO: Learning from the World’s Children” – focused on her travels to more than 30 countries to put children first – and “Hate Hurts,” a handbook for adults and children on confronting and conquering bias.
In addition to Beyond Sport, Stern serves on the boards of Change The World and the We Are Family Foundation and is a member of the Citizens & Scholars and Chime for Change Advisory Boards. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Duke university.
