In a move to foster a more inclusive and equitable sporting environment, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for inputs to inform an upcoming report on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance in sports. This effort aligns with Human Rights Council Resolution 54/25, which emphasizes a world of sport free from these issues.
The deadline for emails submissions is February 14, in advance of the UN presenting its findings at the 60th session of the Human Rights Council. This report will detail progress in implementing the resolution and highlight best practices and effective strategies in combating racism and discrimination in the sporting world.
The OHCHR is seeking contributions from a broad range of stakeholders, including state governments, sports organizations, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations and other relevant entities. Inputs should focus on several key areas, including:
- Experiences and good practices in combating all forms of racism and racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, including religious intolerance and promoting integration through sport.
- States are invited to share measures, programs and policies established to eliminate racism in sports, including anti-racism initiatives and the enforcement of disciplinary codes.
- International Sporting Bodies should share practical measures and policies from sporting organizations to address discrimination, including the creation of codes of conduct against racism.
- Initiatives on partnering and collaborating with grassroots organizations to develop awareness campaigns and initiatives aimed at eradicating intolerance in sports.
- It’s also crucial to gain insights into how the media can effectively report on sports as a platform for promoting human rights and social cohesion.
- Concrete recommendations, including public awareness campaigns, are sought on how to prevent racism and xenophobia in host countries during significant sporting events.
This report underscores the UN’s commitment to leveraging the power of sport as a force for social change and fostering a culture of respect and diversity.
