The UK’s Sport Industry Group (SIG), a Sport Together Fund delivered by Beyond Sport partner, has released its first annual study of emerging challenges, attitudes and trends across the nation’s sports sector. Produced in collaboration with Nielsen Sports, the Sport Industry Report 2025 also includes an important reflection on sport’s role in sustainability and social change and the urgent need for greater leadership in this area. It highlights a broad consensus within the industry on the need for teams and leagues to address these issues.

Key findings also reveal that UK sports fans are increasingly aligned with the principles of social responsibility and sustainability. A significant 72% of fans indicated they would be willing to pay an additional charge on top of their original ticket price if it contributed to environmental benefits. This underscores a growing willingness among fans to financially support initiatives that promote sustainability and social impact.

Sport Industry Report 2025 notes that sport is also seen as a key driver of social cohesion, integration and gender equality, further cementing its role as a catalyst for change. 72% of fans and 77% of professionals agree that professional sport is having a positive impact on diversity and inclusion in society.

However, the report also identifies a gap in awareness regarding sustainability best practices. 33% of fans and 50% of professionals do not know which sports events in the UK are leading the way in environmental sustainability. This presents a significant opportunity for sports organizations and decision-makers to rethink and strengthen their sustainability strategies.

In addition to social change, the report explores investment trends, the emergence of new technologies, evolving fan experiences and the growth of women’s sport. Notably, it highlights the powerful influence of women’s sport, with 83% of fans and 99% of professionals agreeing that women’s sport has the potential to inspire more women and girls to become active.

“The UK sport industry is poised for an exciting future, driven by innovation, inclusivity and a commitment to sustainability. Whether through data-driven strategies, the rise of women’s sport or sport’s profound social impact, the opportunities are immense,” said Nick Keller, SIG Chairman and Beyond Sport Founder & Board Chair. “The next ten years promise significant growth and we are excited to see how sport continues to inspire, unite and lead on a global stage.”

As the UK sports sector looks ahead, the Sport Industry Report 2025 underscores the potential for positive social impact and the continued growth of the industry, particularly in the areas of sustainability, inclusion and gender equality.
