The National Football League’s (NFL) Inspire Change initiative has teamed up with Amazon’s Prime Video and the world’s largest museum, education and research complex, the Smithsonian Institution to promote education, literacy and opportunity for American youth. Through the partnership, one million books and literacy resources will be donated to Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) in 30 NFL markets as part of the “TNF (Thursday Night Football) for Good” program.
Data shows that two-thirds of American children are unable to read proficiently and 40% are essentially non-readers. Literacy, defined as the ability to read, write and comprehend, is a fundamental skill that forms the foundation of a child’s academic journey. However, one in six students drop out of high school each year due to illiteracy.
Poverty plays a large role in these numbers, with more than 60% of low-income families not able to afford to have books in their homes and 43% of adults living in poverty having low literacy levels. 80% of children living in economically disadvantaged communities will lose reading skills over summer breaks due to a lack of access to books and other resources. Research also shows that those from minority ethnic backgrounds are impacted more, with 53% of Black fourth-grade children and 45% of Hispanic fourth-graders scoring below basic reading levels as compared to 23% of white students.
“Placing a book in a child’s hands ignites a journey of wonder and exploration, ultimately empowering them to discover their passion and shape their future,” said Monique Chism, the Smithsonian’s Under Secretary for Education. “This initiative beautifully aligns with the Smithsonian’s mission to inspire curiosity and open pathways to new knowledge. We are excited to distribute 1 million books and literacy resources to youth nationwide.”

This partnership intends to support educational access in the U.S., fostering literacy and creating opportunities for personal and professional development. It will provide a diverse collection of books curated by Smithsonian educators focusing on history, science and technology. NFL players, local leaders and community partners held reading events at BGCA Clubs in Kansas City, Baltimore and Detroit to kick off the national program.
“Young people become what they can see, and books are a powerful tool to inspire new passions and possibilities,” said Chad Hartman, national vice president of Corporate Partnerships & Engagement at BGCA. “We’re grateful to our partners at the NFL, Smithsonian and Prime Video for their shared commitment to ensuring Club kids across the country have access to these invaluable resources.” Founded in 1860, BGCA supports all young people reach their full potential through nearly 5,000 clubs across the country. It offers development programs, promoting academic success, leadership training and healthy lifestyles.
Since 2017, the NFL has provided $375 million to advance education, economic advancement, police-community relations and criminal justice reform. By empowering youth with the tools and resources they need, TNF for Good aims to help children build brighter futures, overcome barriers and contribute to their communities
