BEYOND SPORT & SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS FOUNDATION ASSEMBLE ALLIANCE OF SPORT, TECH, EDUCATION, DEVELOPMENT & BUSINESS LEADERS TO ACCELERATE COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS TO IGNITE PASSION IN STEM EDUCATION THROUGH SPORT

2019 Sport & STEM Alliance to gather on April 2 in New York to set agenda on how to help tackle the STEM Education crisis

WHAT: The first meeting of the 2019 Sport & STEM Alliance, hosted by the NYU School of Professional Studies. Members representing a diverse group of brands, teams, leagues, educators and NGOs, will decide on the key areas of focus for the year and shape the objectives going forward. With a growing need for more creative and collaborative approaches to stimulate youth’s interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Beyond Sport and the 49ers Foundation are strengthening their partnership, which began in 2017, and are now leading the Alliance to the next level. During the Forum, members will share current learnings, global best practice from existing successful sports-based STEM programs and set the objectives, themes and key areas of focus for the year ahead. The event will also launch a new exclusive digital community which aims to set the Alliance up to become a year-round resource on the issue.

WHO: Organized by Founding members and Strategic Partners, Beyond Sport and the 49ers Foundation, the invitation-only event is open to Alliance member organizations (in-person or virtually), currently including: Chelsea FC Foundation, ESPN, EverFi, i-tri, Learn Fresh, Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, MLB, MLSE LaunchPad, NBA/WNBA, NHL, North Melbourne FC, NYU, Oakland Athletics, Port Adelaide FC, STEM Sports, TGR Foundation (Tiger Woods) and UNICEF USA. In addition, representatives from the Jackie Robinson Museum, Tata Consultancy Services, Victor Cruz Foundation, Discovery Education, EPIC Foundation, Verizon, Play Like a Girl, Prudential Center, New Jersey Devils, New York Mets, Techbridge Girls, Laureus and Richemont are scheduled to attend.

WHY: Maintaining a skilled STEM workforce is vital to society's future; they will lead the way in innovating solutions to address food and energy shortages, cures for diseases, climate change, declining natural resources, healthcare, manufacturing and much more. However, right now, vacancies for STEM jobs are nearly triple that of other roles and student interest peaks around middle school and then drops at an eye-opening rate. 60% of US students have lost interest by high school graduation with girls abandoning STEM at a higher rate than boys. Harnessing the huge opportunity sport provides to engage students in STEM, and based on two years of research, the Alliance will create and implement innovative cross-sector solutions that will advance STEM education in exciting new ways.

WHEN: 1:00pm – 5:00pm; Tuesday, April 2, 2019

WHERE: NYU School of Professional Studies, New York, NY
