wbc boost earthquake relief efforts in mexico city

The small towns of Jojutla and Tetela in the State of Morelos, Mexico, suffered considerable loss of life and devastating damage in the earthquakes of September 7th and 19th - with more than seventy families grievously affected.

President of the World Boxing Council Mauricio Sulaiman and President of the Mexican Foundation of Pope Francis’ SCHOLAS program Hector Sulaiman have pledged the support of their organizations to the small towns, and those affected by the natural disasters.

As part of the WBC initiative, more than fifty local children from the areas of Jojutla and Tetela came to paint magnificent coloured murals at an exhibition in the nation’s Senate in Mexico City.

These murals vividly depict the destruction and sadness of these earthquakes, but also hope and the determination to rebuild structures, communities and also lives.

Hector Sulaiman said the disasters have wrought grave consequences, and it has prompted this action from young people around the country. He said: “It represents the fear and the pain, but also their courage.”

Senate President Ernesto Cordero also applauded the youngsters reminding everyone that some families in Morelos had lost everything, and he stressed the importance and determination to rebuild.

The WBC brought gifts for the children and families affected at the event – an iconic WBC mini green and gold belt was given to a young boy and a girl.

Mauricio Sulaiman also brought with him the treat of Champions lineup including: Humberto Chiquita Gonzalez, Pipino Cuevas, Rafael Bazooka Limon and Lupita Martinez. Many of them gave out white boxing gloves to the children and took part in a coaching session with them.

Mauricio Sulaiman has also pledged to build and equip a gym module along with a trainer for young children affected in the towns. He said: “We must stand with our family and society. These murals painted by the children are an important part of the reconstruction for the future, in a physical and psychological sense.

"Morelos was very severely damaged in the earthquakes, and we are proud to be here, validating what State and National Authorities are doing to help. It's gratifying and humbling to see so many families left homeless, have a shelter and food to eat."

Mauricio praised the many volunteers in the aftermath of these quakes as brave, selfless and magnificent saying: "We all need to be part of the active solution. It's not enough to feel or be sorry. You have to go out, do something and help your neighbor!"
