“SPORTS CAN BE A MEASURE OF WHERE SOCIETY IS, AND A CATALYST FOR CHANGE”

Sport’s role in social movements, advocacy and activism was on the agenda at this year's Beyond Sport United, as guests from around the world convened to listen, discuss and debate.

Ambassador Miriam Sapiro welcomed the international delegation with an opening keynote, reaffirming sport’s socio-political position and influence, “sports can be a measure of where society is, and a catalyst for change.”

Experts helped shape the discussion in the morning by providing a global focus. As the Founder of the agency behind campaigns that include President Obama’s 2008 and 2012 election, Let’s Move and Microsoft, Rob Shepherdson declared, “good politics is good policy, good policy is good politics.”

Soapbox sessions provided inspirational stories as audiences were captivated by the likes of Chris Mosier and motivational Head Coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, David Fizdale.

Mosier commented on equal rights and finding a voice: “how do we create our best teams in sport & business? By allowing everyone to be their open & authentic self”.  Whilst Coach Fizdale provided an honest and refreshing insight into his motivation adding: “you're missing the point of your day job if you're not using it for greater good!”

Beyond Sport United included wider events in this year’s program, with the Beyond Sport Global Awards taking place the evening before the conference at One World Observatory in Manhattan.

$130,000 in grants were announced to this year’s winners, with presenters on the night including WWE superstars Nia Jax and Sami Zayn, boxing legend Evander Holyfield, Olympic gold medallist Donna de Varona and five time Olympic medallist Nastia Luikin.

Winners included: former college basketball star and activist Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, Everton Football Club, Unilever and MLSE Foundation.

10Roundtables brought together some of the brightest and most innovative minds in the sector to lead the most contemporary and pertinent discussions. In partnership with NYU, this year’s impact takes place in the form of three pieces of research being commissioned by the University for further research. These include Chevron exploring sport and STEM education, EY and UN Women furthering gender equality and SMG Insight developing a social responsibility measurement tool.

Council member for the 38th District of the New York City Council Carlos Menchaca welcomed delegates and local youth to Community in Action, at Street Soccer USA’s hub in Brooklyn’s Red Hook for a festival of sport. The Change Foundation, Girl Determined, 4th Family and Playworks demonstrated their innovative programming with practical showcases taking place throughout the afternoon.
